SONY VAIO W Mini Laptop review

SONY recently launched its first netbook in India at a fairly low price of Rs 29,990. We were there at its launch event. The VAIO W netbook weighs just 1.2kg and is powered by Intel Atom N280 processor that runs at 1.66GHz clock speed.

The screen is glossy 10.1-inch widescreen LED display. It comes with 1366×768 pixel resolution which is more than what you will find in the netbooks these days. Most of the netbooks come with 1024×600 resolution screen. We highly appreciate the higher resolution screen as it allows us to see more on the screen at a time.

Keyboard

The VAIO W is chiclet keys which are getting very popular in the netbooks these days. The keys are springy and raised which make it comfortable to use. Using touchpad was also pleasant to use.

The VAIO W is just 20mm thick. It comes with just 1GB RAM, which sounds a little low at first glance, but we must understand that it comes with Windows XP, not Windows Vista like other SONY VAIOs. It has a 0.3MP webcam too which works fine with Skype video calls

It is available in pink, white and brown colors. Sadly, it won’t be available in black.

The VAIO W is equipped with Intel SpeedStep Technology which allows you to prolong battery life by reducing the clock speed. It is obvious that you won’t be using the netbook at full power at all the times. So it makes sense in lowering the clock speed to gain some more battery life.

Unfortunately, Sony is selling the VAIO W with only 3-cell battery which means you will getting battery run time of around 3 hours at max.
